In the beginning, a diabetes diagnosis is a personal issue that may seem impossible to defeat. But eventually, hope can spread with the help of others. In its August issue, Diabetes Forecast, the consumer magazine of the American Diabetes Association, presents stories of inspiration and bravery to encourage people with diabetes to thrive.
Fighting for Fairness: With help from the Association, Latesha Taylor is on a mission to stop discrimination in Washington, D.C., public schools—for her daughter and every other child with diabetes. Together, they seek to overturn what they believe is a discrimination policy that denies diabetes care to students when a school nurse is not present.
For the People: Kelly Concho-Hayes, a Navajo and Acoma Indian, has served hundreds of people as the Association’s Native American outreach manager in southern California. Drawing on her heritage and personal experiences growing up on a reservation, she has shared diabetes information with more than 1,300 fellow Native Americans.
Being Discreet: Bob Pedersen felt awkward and disappointed after a friend disclosed his type 2 diabetes to a waiter during a social dinner. This article features tips on supporting loved ones with diabetes and knowing how to do so without breaching privacy.
Additional exciting features and columns in the August 2012 issue of Diabetes Forecast include:
- Nine terms the diabetes world could live without, including “denial” and sometimes “diabetic.”
- How to stockpile diabetes supplies for unexpected emergencies.
- Ways people with diabetes may benefit from mobile health technology.
- Exercise devices that can help people with diabetes get more out of activities, track fitness levels, find motivation and improve fitness overall.
- No-cook recipes, including Mediterranean zucchini “pasta” and Asian chicken lettuce cups.
- Increasing evidence that people with diabetes are more likely to develop dementia in old age than those without diabetes.
Diabetes Forecast has been America’s leading diabetes magazine for more than 60 years, offering the latest news on diabetes research and treatment to provide information, inspiration and support to people with diabetes.
